Case: Originally local builder put sealed sump and manual pump system and put polythene against the building and wall around the property to hold it in place up to 700mm high and doors were protected by flood barriers. Cost over £20k. System completely failed during many floods including 2007 and there was no insurance after the 2000 floods. New system was installed after the old one was removed and included strengthening the building, veneer walling, NRV’s to the WC and sink waste, new permeable sumps with automatic pumps, lift off door barriers to doors and windows.

Tested by flooding?: The new system was tested in anger in 2008 just after its installation and the cottage was not inundated even though the floodwater was around for over 24 hrs at a height of 680mm.
